I was at the club throwing my weekly party on Thursday, so I was only able to follow along through MLB.com text messages, and the verbal reports of my friends who came in over the course of the night who had been watching it from wherever they were last. In spite of being a decidedly lame way to 'catch' a game, this method was still exponentially more gratifying and efficient than via the newly improved, and so now even more craptastically crappy (and excruciatingly slow) but with better graphics (I guess), Gameday graphical rendering on MLB.com, and was even quite a fun way to spend the evening!
Someone would come in and, knowing that I would want to know what was going on in the game while I was stuck having fun at the party (poor me!), would come over, tell me the score and what had been going on (Glavine out in 2!!??), and then we would have some drinks, and wait for new text messages (that's me, with my decidedly un-fancy phone), or check for runs scored and other news (that was Kevin or David, with their fancy, technologically advanced phones, or Miguel, who's phone can probably do open-heart surgery if you ask it to... faaaancy!). The frequently fluctuating scores, and the fact that the Mets never had enough run insurance for us to feel good about the lead, kept us all in suspense, and so although the party was pretty dead, I managed to tie one on, have a bunch of fun dancing around with my buddies to awesome music all night (thanks Keith, Joe and Antoine!), keep track of what was happening with the game, and then celebrate immediately after the final score with a round of shots at the bar. Good times, I tell yas!
I finally got to watch the game on Friday night, (who loves their all-season on-demand package more than me? Nobody!), and was able to confirm what my eyes had seen in June, but that I still could not get my head around...
That IS Vin Scully, still calling games for the Dodgers! And not only that, he is still fantastic, absolutely fantastic, AND all of this without even a color man. He's 80 years old now, and has been calling for the Dodgers for 57 years. :misty: His is the voice of my long-standing ringtone; "... Little roller, up along first... behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!" :misty: So much fun having him calling the game, and I appreciated how, when he got Gotay's name wrong, he came back later to explain and apologize. That's a man right there, gotta' love him!
An angry Shawn Green is an even hotter Shawn Green... no pun intended! Watching him all angry on second, talking mean to hottie Jeff Kent like he's ready for some fisticuffs, and then over on third with also-ran hottie Garciaparra talking him down so that soon they were both smiling and chatting... all that scene needed was a benches clearing, impromptu "shirts on skins" tackle football game in the rain to break out, and my ultimate sports viewing fantasy would be realized! :fans self: But I digress, where was I... ? Oh yeah.
The early departure of Tom Glavine notwithstanding, that was a great game, and it was extra-great to see our offense heating up some more... Let's go Mets! Long live Vin Scully!
